CannWell’s Social Justice Pledge

1

Destigmatize cannabis as medicine and cannabis use in general.

This means advocating for cannabis reform and educating the public on cannabis use.

2

Help those who have been negatively impacted by cannabis laws.

This mean connecting people with non-violent cannabis crimes to pro-bono lawyers offering expungement services.

3

Support BIPOC and minority communities in securing equitable opportunities in the cannabis industry.

This commitment involves supporting groups and individuals who have historically been disadvantaged in the cannabis space.

"The goal of social equity laws is to ensure that people from communities disproportionately harmed by marijuana prohibition and discriminatory law enforcement are included in the new legal marijuana industry."

— National Association of Cannabis Businesses

Why Equity Matters in the Cannabis Industry

The cannabis industry has a unique responsibility to address the historical injustices and systemic inequalities that have disproportionately affected minority communities, particularly those involving cannabis-related offenses. The legalization and commercialization of cannabis present an unprecedented opportunity to right these wrongs and create a more equitable future.

Historical Injustices:

  • For decades, the War on Drugs has targeted minority communities, leading to disproportionate arrests, convictions, and incarcerations for cannabis-related offenses. According to the ACLU, Black individuals are nearly four times more likely to be arrested for cannabis possession than white individuals, despite similar usage rates.

  • As the legal cannabis industry grows, it is crucial to acknowledge and address these historical injustices by creating opportunities for those most affected.

Economic Empowerment:

  • Legal cannabis represents a burgeoning industry with significant economic potential. However, minority groups and individuals with past cannabis convictions often face barriers to entry, including lack of access to capital, resources, and industry networks.

  • Promoting equity within the industry ensures that the economic benefits of cannabis legalization are shared more broadly and that minority communities can thrive and prosper.

Social Responsibility:

  • As a legal cannabis business, we have a social responsibility to lead by example and advocate for policies that promote justice and equality. This includes supporting expungement efforts, advocating for inclusive hiring practices, and providing support for minority-owned businesses.

  • Ensuring that our practices are equitable and inclusive not only aligns with our values, but also strengthens the integrity and sustainability of the industry as a whole.

Let’s build a safer, more inclusive tomorrow for everyone.
